“Promiscuous” Media Practices and Social Inclusion of Muslim Gay Men.

The widespread adoption of mobile media has brought changes in the way many people access social resources and understand cultural practices. The new possibilities affect the way many people understand our social and physical surroundings by aiding real-time ubiquitous negotiations of identity and culture. However, there is a paucity of academic work on the topic of the relationship between personal mobile practices and social inclusion of marginalized populations, in particular, muslim gay men. This research explores the ways in which young muslim gay men use mobile media for identity negotiation and social inclusion – what is colloquially termed ‘coming out’. The primary research question is:

What role do promiscuous mobile media practices play in supporting identity negotiation, community-inclusion, and cultural adaptation of recently migrated muslim gay men in Toronto, Canada?
